Whether you are a competitive or novice tri-athlete, you’re invited to participate in the 19th Annual Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon being held this Saturday, September 19 at the Delaware Seashore State Park, starting on Tower Road. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. and consists of a half-mile ocean swim, a 16-mile bike ride, and a 3.45-mile run. This is a safe, fun race with a fast and scenic course. If you are up to the challenge, then there is still time to register. But hey, if swimming, biking, and running in one race isn’t your thing, then consider being a volunteer or sponsor, or just show your support by being a cheering spectator.
Since its inception in 1996, the Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon has been a popular charity event that supports the Sussex Family YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. The campaign awards scholarships that allow children to participate in YMCA programs such as summer camp, pre-school, after school care, swim lessons, and Water Safety Week. Last year the race donated $12,660 to the campaign.
Prizes are given to top finishers in each age group and awards go to the top three male and female finishers. First time finishers also receive prizes, so no matter if you are a novice or a master, you will walk away with a well-earned token for this impressive accomplishment. And don’t forget the after party. Food and beverages will be available upon completion of the race, along with raffle prizes and massages. What a great way to indulge after all that hard physical work.
Registration for the race takes place on Friday, September 18 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. at the Sussex Family YMCA located at 20080 Church Street in Rehoboth Beach. There is no registration on the day of the event. Free parking for the event will be available in Dewey Beach.
