The Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon has come a long way since its first race back in 1996. It was originally held behind Gary’s Surf Spray Café (now called Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill) on New Orleans Street in Dewey Beach with an after party on the roof of the building. It quickly outgrew the venue and has been held at the Delaware Seashore State Park on Tower Road ever since.
The event, now in its 20th year, will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 a.m. Packet pick up and expo will be at the Sussex Family YMCA, 20080 Church Street in Rehoboth Beach, from 3-9 p.m. on Friday, September 16. Also on Friday, you can load up on your pre-race carbs at an all-you-can-eat pasta dinner at Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill from 5-9:30 p.m.
This is a safe, enjoyable, and fun triathlon with a fast and scenic course, consisting of a ½-mile ocean swim, 16-mile bike ride, and 3.45-mile run. In addition to the traditional Sprint Tri, there are options for aquabike, duathlon, or triathlon relay. Post-party with food, beverages, awards, and prizes will be held after the race. Non-racers are welcome to join the party with a $5 donation.
All proceeds from the race benefit the Sussex Family YMCA’s ‘Strong Kids Campaign,’ which provides resources to support YMCA programs that give kids the opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
