Dewey Beach is a well known hot spot for skimboarding. If you're not familiar with skimboarding (think skateboard meets surfboard) it's a sport in
which a rider uses a skimboard to glide across the water's surface to meet an incoming breaking wave and ride it back to shore (sometimes performing
some pretty rad surface and air maneuvers in the process). It's pretty cool to watch 180s, 360s, ollies, and shove-its. (Do I sound like I know what
I'm talking about? I really don't but I do know it takes some serious skill to perform these tricks!)
Every year more than 100 of the world’s top amateur skimboarders convene in Dewey Beach's famous shore break for the Zap Amateur World Championships of Skimboarding. The competition, now in its 35th year, will be held this weekend August 13 & 14 on the beach at Bellevue Street in Dewey. Competition begins daily at 9 a.m.
Leading up to the main event is the 3rd Annual Summer Vibes Fest, a multi-day festival highlighting the Southern Delaware beach culture and summer spirit. Activities include the Rehoboth AM Skate Jam, a SUP Sprint Challenge, a bikini fashion show, a pie eating contest, an art show, music by DJ Woody B, raffles, and giveaways.
The weekend wraps up with an all ages closing party on the beach featuring a reggae show performed by New Kingston. Click here for complete event details.
