So you may not be a professional sand carver (yes, this is a real title) but you’re invited to grab a bucket and shovel and bring your sand carving skills to the 38th Annual Sandcastle Contest. 100+ teams will be on hand (and on sand) to show off their sand-sculpting talent on Saturday, September 10.
The contest is open to all ages and will be held on the beach in front of Funland (between Brooklyn Avenue and Hickman Street). This is a new location and date for the long-standing (and long-sanding) event. Moving forward the contest will be held annually the Saturday after Labor Day.
Registration is between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sculptures may be started at any time on the day of competition, but must be completed for judging by 3:00 p.m. Winners will be announced at approximately 5:00 p.m.
Along with traditional sandcastles, past creations have included swamp animals, mermaids, pyramids, crabs, dolphins and sharks. If you're not up to being a “sand master” but want to see these impressive and imaginative works of sand art up close and personal then stop by and watch the action free of charge.
In the event of bad weather, set up and registration may be delayed until 10:30 a.m. If bad weather persists, the event will be postponed until the following year. If bad weather occurs during the contest, participants may continue at will or at the discretion of lifeguards. Judging may be cancelled at any time if warranted by current weather conditions.
The contest is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce. Click here for more information or call 302-227-2233.
