What off-season? BIG events happen year-round

Alissa Rosenstein - Tuesday, February 10, 2015

If you've ever said, "Summer is over, now what?" then you don't know Rehoboth Beach. Sure, we're known as the Nation's Summer Capital, but as the locals - and really anyone with a pulse - knows, this town is jumping year-round. It's been a long time since the only time to find action was in June, July and August.

Rehoboth Beach is no longer restricted by the Memorial Day and Labor Day bookends. In fact most locals will tell you that the best time of the year are the nine months between September and May. We have so many big annual events going year-round you'll forget its a sleepy little beach town. Take a gander. We dare you to scoff...

Sea Witch Festival: Sea Witch is more than just a festival, it's a three-day Halloween extravaganza that has more action than a haunted house has ghosts. There are so many facets to this wickedly fun family event we can't list them all. Highlights include broom tossing, parades, costumes, trick-or-treating, fiddlers, shows, games, food, and pony rides. The festival just turned 25 and will only get better with age.

Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival: Another major area event that just celebrated its silver anniversary is the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. For four days in October the smooth sounds of jazz fill the air as visitors take a "musical pilgrimage" to see some of the best local, national and international jazz acts out there. Venues range from large concerts at the Convention Center to more intimate settings at restaurants and pubs.

The Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival: Want to be a part of the Mid-Atlantic's premiere cultural event and see some captivating new films? The Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival is held every November and includes features, documentaries, and shorts. You may even rub shoulders with a celebrity guest. It's kinda like Sundance without the snow boots.

Holidays: Rehoboth Beach and its surrounding areas don't skimp on holiday traditions. Tree-lightings, sing-a-longs, holiday parades, art and craft shows, boutiques, book fairs, shows, tours - you get the picture. It's magical, like being in Whoville.

The Polar Bear Plunge: Where else can you voluntarily launch yourself into frigid ocean water for the sake of charity? The Polar Bear Plunge, a Rehoboth Beach tradition, is held every February and A LOT of people do it. They even created a multi-day festival leading up to the big event. Yeah, you may experience a little bit of shrinkage, but, hey, at least its for a good cause.

Sidewalk Sales: Twice a year, in the spring and fall, downtown Rehoboth Beach holds its Sidewalk Sales. The stores clear inventory for the next season, and reduce prices to ridiculous levels. If you love a good bah-gain, you'd be a little meshugenah not to check 'em out.

Music Festivals and Conferences: In the spring and fall neighboring Dewey Beach holds several free music festivals that showcase the northeast region's hottest bands. The annual Dewey Beach Music Conference is a unique experience for musicians and concertgoers alike. Lovers of live music will get a happy earful from talented artists ranging in music styles and musicians will benefit from interacting with panelists, speakers, exhibitors, and industry professionals.
