While researching all things bacon for this week’s blog, I found a plethora of funny bacon quips, deep philosophical bacon thoughts, and just a general unabashed love for this cured pork product. (My personal fave: a cartoon pig in the desert with the quote "I'm bacon out here." Oh, the wit!) But I digress. I was astounded (but not really surprised) by the passion and deep devotion for these salty, greasy, sizzling slices of “hog heaven.” There truly is a universal love for bacon. This little piggy is the “It Girl” of the food world with events being held in its honor on a regular basis.
So it should come as no surprise to anyone that there would be a two-day festival celebrating the sizzling cured goodness that is bacon right in our own backyard. Bacon Fest 2016 will be held on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 in locations throughout Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach, with a welcome party on Friday, April 22 at Dewey Beer Company on Saulsbury Street in Dewey Beach.
The event, which benefits SoDel Cares, will offer two pass options: VIP and General Admission. Both passes include 20+ pork-tastic (gawd, did I really just go there?) bacon-creation tastings. VIP ticket holders will get an official event t-shirt along with other special offers and discounts. Competitors will vie for "top pig" honors for best bacon bites and the piglets will enjoy a beach bonfire at New Orleans beach on Saturday night. The event comes to a close at The Starboard on Sunday with an awards ceremony where the top pigs will be revealed.
If you are one of the millions of bacon paramours out there than this event is a must. I promise it won't be a boar. (And that my friends is the final pig pun of the day.)
